MANTA BOARD: DECEMBER 2023

The MANTA Board is posted every month, but the quests are on a "2 month cycle." This means quests can last for two months with possible updates or new additions in the second month before it completely refreshes for the next cycle.

Quests are separated into five categories and all have flat point values: General (4pts), Corsair (4pts), Paladin (4pts), Bounties (6pts), and Specials (12pts). Note: characters helping opposing armada quests will only be rewarded 2pts for participation unless specified otherwise. Special quests won't always be available so it may appear blank at most times. These can range from group quests such as for special ship upgrades or island related quests, or they could be special event quests. All quest points can be used for the Rewards Shop.

For this month's board update, the quests have been updated to reflect progress from last month, with some carrying over as is. Of note, the Paladins are continuing to deal with the previous Gallows Gambit quest with the Corsairs eligible to try to enact their own justice (Corsairs can receive FULL 4pts for the current Paladin's Gambit quest). The previous Goose bounty has been upgraded to a more menacing one, and there is a new bounty as well.

If you have any questions, comment to this entry.

» GENERAL (4pts)
Bite-Sized Blessings
Reward: Seemingly +1 to your luck and a rad temporary tattoo.

There have been sightings of a small baby dragon prowling and sneaking around Eltrut, causing a ruckus and breaking things as it goes. It seems to be a playful and mischievous creature with a penchant for biting ears. Legend has it that a bite on the ear by a baby dragon brings a lifetime of good luck.

Assist in safely capturing this baby dragon and take it back to the Elah sanctuary, providing a protected space for it to live. Alternatively, you can scoop it up and return it to Nogard, allowing it to live a free life on the island without constraints.

If you happen to be bitten by the baby dragon, it will leave a small blue mark resembling a tattoo on your skin. This mark will persist for months and won't come off with normal soap or oils, but will gradually fade with time. The significance of a dragon’s mark in terms of good luck remains uncertain... However, you may find yourself particularly lucky in the months to come.

The Fey Fighters
Reward: A musical instrument of your choice and one magical effect to go with it.

The Fey Fighters, a duo of skilled bards, have made their presence known on Atnam, generously offering complimentary music lessons to all interested individuals. Proficient in every musical instrument imaginable, they aspire to share their musical expertise, hoping to spread the joys and delights of music throughout the islands.

Upon attending a lesson the bards will inquire about your instrument of choice, as they can only teach one instrument per individual. They'll reveal that mastering the chosen instrument will bestow a unique magical effect. Whatever combination you opt for promises to create a truly enchanting and unforgettable performance.

The following effects below can be learned alongside your instrument of choice. Remember, you only get one.

✦ Listeners fall asleep and sleep talk about the dreams they are having.
✦ The target will be afflicted with nonstop hiccups for three hours.
✦ The recipient will have an unstoppable urge to stand on their head.
✦ Playing will create an explosion of fireworks!
✦ The listener will be compelled to lie for a whole day.

A Storm of Sneezes
Reward: 250 dubloons and a sprig of enchanted mistletoe.

Due to the chilly winter nights, poor Eltrut has caught a terrible cold. The Leviathan is plagued by a severe cough that shakes the island and powerful sneezes that are rattling windows. Immediate care is needed, or the island will endure more than just a few rocking earthquakes!

What are some remedies for the common cold? Provide Eltrut with the most substantial batch of chicken noodle soup that can be carried. Wipe his nose with as many giant hand-knitted handkerchiefs as you can muster. Administer herbal remedies and smelling salts to clear his sinuses. Tenderly rub his head and use giant mops to wash away the snot and sweat. It's a substantial task, but even giant living turtle islands need a bit of tender loving care from time to time.

The Picture of Dorina Gray
Reward: A painted portrait depicting your inner soul.

A noble lady, Miss Dorina Gray, is seeking subjects for her latest artistic endeavor. She's in search of individuals with captivating faces and even more compelling stories to become the subjects of her upcoming painting.

Join her for a session where you can share the tales of your life, and she'll capture your essence in a portrait. It might seem peculiar that she needs to hear your stories for a visual creation because, intriguingly, she is blind. Despite her lack of sight, she possesses the remarkable ability to perceive your soul through your words alone. Because of this, she'll paint your portrait reflecting your inner beauty... or ugliness.

Feel free to bring a companion for the session—she'll be delighted to paint both of you.

Magitech Madness
Reward: A Multitool. It's a swiss army knife! But more!

Last month's tests on various new magitech technologies and their conductors proved to be highly productive! From electromagnetism to finding the best conductors and catalysts for different types of elements, we have made leaps and bounds! Not only have we been able to create various advancements such as working lamps that run purely on fire and thunder conductors, but we’ve also created useful things like magic-heaters, magnet-powered astrolabes and clocks, and magitech-powered auto flushing toilets! Nice!

But we can go bigger. With fuel and power advancements on the horizon, it's only natural that the thinking minds want to go bigger. They have their sights set on creating advanced canons and firepower that can be attached to ships.

Therefore, researchers are hoping to test magitech weaponry in the form of magitech guns, bombs and large canons. Well? Get to it! There could be some huge beasties out there that need to be blasted!

(Optional: Combine this quest with a bounty!)

» PALADINS (4pts)
Fountain of Blades
Reward: The Sword of Lasting Light.

The paladins are preparing for a new expedition. Gear up and travel to explore a newly discovered island to uncover a lost relic item. The item that the paladins are looking to uncover is the one and only Sword of Lasting Light, rumoured to be buried deep in the island’s core.

Upon arrival, travel down tunnels and moss-ridden caverns deep down into the island’s middle. Down below are several cenotes, which are natural pits or sinkholes resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater. There is something strange and alluring about this groundwater. These cenotes are filled with powerful youth-inducing water and little fish that nibble at your feet.

The pools of water have a way of luring people in and trapping them in old childhood memories (good or bad) that they will struggle to escape from. Anyone caught in the pools will be trapped inside these memories until they can find a way to escape them, such as someone pulling them from the memory themselves or gathering the strength of will to break free from the past.

Resist and escape the allure of pools of water, uncover the relic, and bring it back to Elah. Having the sword added to the Conservatory will grant Elah with longer-lasting lanterns, campfires, and candlelight. With the long winter solstice nights approaching soon, the light will be welcome.

Paladin's Gambit
Reward: A pamphlet on, "How to Get Good: A Paladin's Iron Will"

Last month, the incident where a shady paladin had been making unlawful arrests leading to false imprisonment caused quite a commotion. Corsairs were captured against their will, hurt and even nearly executed through no fault of their own. The old gallows were left in shambles after an attack leaving everything shattered and destroyed. But more than that it’s left a terrible rumble through the Paladin armada.

They are drowning under piles of paperwork, trying to file every injury report, false imprisonment claim, legitimate complaint, and more. It’s a mess that is going to take time to sort out, starting with trying to find the culprit who started this mess in the first place. They did find a particularly interesting ledger but who wrote "eat shit and die" in it?

So until the paladin who made this grave mistake is found or steps forward and all the paperwork is finished, all paladins will be subjected to a hundred pushups every morning.

Additionally, all paladins are required to help clean up the mess. That means cleaning up the old gallows, the shattered wood and all the damage that was done. Work on restoring public opinion by doing repairs to the old streets, and fixing buildings, windows and roads. Show the city that a little honest hard work can make a difference.

Paladins should be aware that all won’t be well in the streets while they try to rebuild. Corsairs will be looking to retaliate. Corsairs know they can get into trouble but this was definitely the paladin's fault. Some are trying to keep the peace, but the more hotheaded ones want, well, heads. Especially those who are always waiting for an opportunity to target paladins. And so some portions of corsairs will try to enact their own sense of justice, especially with the paladins dragging their feet. Be wary of fights in the streets.

(Note: Participating Corsairs will receive full 4pts for this quest)

A Very Beary Night
Reward: A basket of peppermint flavoured candy canes. They make your lips tingle.

No one is quite sure how the armada got this request? A mother bear is asking for help in locating her baby bear that is lost in the woods. She’s been lost for a few days now, but the report insists that she is still out there and hopefully not just hibernating early. They still have a lot of eating they need to do before they can sleep!

Venture out and try and find this lost baby bear. The only other notes that have been left about this baby bear is that she has a little jingle bell around her neck that rings when she walks, and that she has a taste for eating holly berries. But no one will tell you that the bear happens to be playing with a lost hyper-active fireball flinging fire spirit that has somehow found its way into the woods. Upon approaching, it might fling massive fireballs at you if it feels threatened... It just wants to play with its friend!

It might be stormy out there in your search thanks to Eltrut being sick. If it takes more than a day try to find a cave to hanker down and camp in for the night. Once you find and rescue the baby bear (and the forest) bring her back to her mother and call it a job beary well done.

» CORSAIRS (4pts)
Coins of the Crescent
Reward: Captain Randell Red-Lord's lost Gold Coins of Exceptional Healing.

The corsairs have caught wind of a new treasure for the taking. Travel to explore a newly discovered island where it is said that a dead captain’s lost Gold Coins of Exceptional Healing can be found. The coins may look like normal old currency, but they are actually lost artifacts that hold the power to cure curses.

The island itself is gray, eerie and trashed with several broken ships scattered across the shores. But it’s not the island that will prove difficult in this quest. Travelling closer to this island will seemingly haunt ships with strange wolf-like howls. The closer a ship sails to the island, the louder the howls get. Soon enough sailors might find that the howls drive people mad until they themselves start to howl and scream, almost like they have rabies or something worse. Those who cannot resist the howls will slowly turn rabid, even attacking fellow crewmates and friends with their teeth and nails.

If your ship can make it to the island intact with enough mind to treasure hunt and find these coins buried deep in the earth, the howling curse will be completely lifted from all those effected by it.

Selling the coins to Nogard will grant casters on the island with faster-acting healing spells. If the coins are held in rotation on the island all healing items and medicine will be twice as effective. Useful, no?

A Steamy Winter Heist
Reward: A box of steamy night time tea and a rare packet of blooderscotch candy.

Do you know that old saying that most babies are conceived during the winter months? With the long nights coming and the colder nights getting colder, all that is left to do is to keep your bed warm at night. Preferably with another body. With this trend, a new tea has become popular amongst the people. A special bedtime tea that warms you from head to toe and keeps you feeling steamy and sweet all night long. That’s right, it’s an aphrodisiac tea.

Steal a shipment of tea from travelling merchant ships. Since it’s such a popular tea at the moment, many corsairs are hoping to bank on the idea and sell the tea on the black market at an exorbitant price. The rarer the tea gets the higher the price goes.

Or steal some tea for yourself. Who wouldn’t want to try it?

Poke 'n Prance
Reward: The Bottle of Boundless Coffee. A wounderous item that always has fresh hot coffee inside of it.

There is a new bravery test going around various Corsair ships. It’s a test of speed and endurance and a way to test just how brave you are in the face of danger. If anyone can make it out of this test (mostly) alive, they’ll find themselves rewarded with brownie points, bragging rights and a nice quest reward.

The rules are simple: pick up a sword, pair up with a partner and begin your typical swordplay spar. But whoever can stab the other person without lethally killing them wins. That means Corsairs have to learn exactly where to stab someone so that the blade misses every important organ inside of the body. It’s a learning opportunity, really!

Pair up and see who can come out on top with the best control over their sword arm and the best knowledge of the body! And maybe keep a healer nearby.

» BOUNTIES (6pts)
Hormone-Inducing Pollen Plants
Reward: 200 dubloons per plant killed.

A certain type of plant has somehow mutated and is trapping oblivious travellers in its vines. These medium-sized plants emit powerful hormones that attract creatures to wander in close. The pollen incites powerful sexual arousal in its prey in order to trap them. Once they are close enough, the plants wrap their prey in powerful vines and consume them with a trap-like flower head and poisonous pistil.

For magitech madness, can the Raiders of the Lost Arts use some of the Magitech Weaponry asking to be tested as part of their offering to the Leviathan? And then use whatever comes out with the ship to test it?

Questions about attacks:
Does cutting off a head with a fire attack seal the wound enough to prevent it from growing new heads?
Is killing a head without severing it - choking, crushing the skull, etc - leave that head 'dead'?
-If it doesn't (because all heads need to die to be 'dead' or to be cut off to be 'dead'), how long does it leave it out of the fight so that there's time to try and 'kill' the other heads before it's revived?
If Daqiang decided to power up a few people with fire-based powers, could their combined efforts roast it to death?

For Fountain of Blades (Paladin) quest, it says the reward is the sword itself but there is only one of them and it needs to be handed in, doesn't it? How would that work if multiple people are doing the quest? :|a

HELLO werid question but

1. how many souls does an eight-headed goose have? like, one, or one for each head?
2. if the answer is more than one:
    a) does each new head that grows back contain a new soul
    b) can rem harvest a soul per each head that's taken down or does the thing have to be defeated/it'll vanish before she can do so

So...if Kaveh were to go fact check on the conditions in the Elah sanctuary for the baby, are they in fact humane. Does she have room to run around. Will she be well cared for???

Alternatively, if he should check, are there other dragons of her kind on Nogard?
