MANTA BOARD: NOVEMBER 2023

The MANTA Board is posted every month, but the quests are on a "2 month cycle." This means quests can last for two months with possible updates or new additions in the second month before it completely refreshes for the next cycle.

Quests are separated into five categories and all have flat point values: General (4pts), Corsair (4pts), Paladin (4pts), Bounties (6pts), and Specials (12pts). Special quests won't always be available so it may appear blank at most times. These can range from group quests such as for special ship upgrades or island related quests, or they could be special event quests. All quest points can be used for the Rewards Shop.

For this month's board update, the quests have been completely refreshed with brand new quests! For the Claws & Companions quest, please comment to the designated toplevel to claim which cat your character will be adopting. There is only ONE of each specified cat, so first comment gets the claim. Limited ONE CAT PER CHARACTER.

If you have any questions, comment to this entry.

» GENERAL (4pts)
Claws & Companions
Reward: A loyal pet cat that can hunt, jump, slash, and parkour its way to any victory.

A terrible outbreak of mice and other small rodents has appeared on various ships across the seas. Perhaps someone left a barrel of rice open or left the fruit to rot for too long. Whatever the reason, ships are becoming more and more infested with wild rodents every single day. This is a terrible health concern and also quite dangerous to all ship's food stores.

Luckily, there appears to be a solution on the horizon. A local animal sanctuary has been training a gaggle of warrior cats that can now be adopted. They have been trained to hunt down every single pesky creature that threatens any ship. But they do need owners. Please do your due diligence and become an owner to one of these highly trained warrior cats and show them that a life on a ship with you is worth all their training.

The cats below are available for adoption:

Spellbound Circuitry
Reward: A sheet of parchment upon which is drawn a complex mechanical contraption.

A group of hardy researchers have found a way to harness water and thunder magic to power small new contraptions called magitech machines. They can do simple things like tumble wash clothing or turn water into ice cubes for drinks. Or even power lamps!

There is still a lot of research to be done to better power these magitech machines and they are looking into the use of water-based or thunder-based magic to power more contraptions in a more efficient way. They’ve found that magitech reacts well when it has a conductor like bone, stone, gems or even metals to guide and to store the power inside of it. Anyone with magic or skills like it is more than welcome to come help test these inventions. Perhaps you can find a way to power a wind turbine properly or use electric magic to make magitech lamps stay on. Test various types of conductors and see what you can find! Any creative way to use magic to help further this new technology is welcome!

However remember, it seems that magic can only go so far in most cases. Perhaps there's something out there in the world that can help conduct and store the magic better?

Thinking With Portals
Reward: A small packet filled with pink dust. Effects unknown.

A curious new item is being showcased as the best way to travel since someone invented the sailing ship. The person claiming this seems a little off their rocker, but they're taking any brave volunteers to go ahead give it a try. If you do you might be pleasantly surprised! Or pleasantly motion sick.

Take this Hither-Thither Staff and give it a good honest try. The staff itself is able to create two portals with a flick of the wrist. The portals interconnect so you can travel from one portal to wherever you put the other one. Can you see now why some might think this will replace maritime travel? It's a little unstable and might shoot you out of one portal at rapid speeds. But that's probably the worst of it.

Leap of Faith
Reward: A magical otamatone that only plays the song Thunderstruck.

A new challenge has appeared in Atnam in hopes of reconciling some of the iffy feelings between the paladins and the corsairs. After all the recent issues with break-ins at the Conversatory in Elah and missing shipments in Nogard, they are hoping that this new challenge will help foster some more understanding between the two groups. Or at least help squeeze out any unwanted negativity for a while.

Participants are asked to team up with a person from the opposite armada and one of them is to climb up to one of the clifftops on Atnam. From there the one who climbs must take a leap of faith and jump off the cliff and be caught or fished out from the water below by the other person. If they survive? Well, swap places and try it again.

Trust building at its finest!

A Healing Mix-Up
Reward: A copy of DRAGON HEAT. A classic steamy romance novel about sexy dragon love. It's so cheesy and stupid that you just can't stop reading it! You might be super into dragon abs once you’re done.

There is a saucy new healer in Eltrut who is requesting special items for a new potion he's brewing. He says he found the recipe in a book he's currently reading. He claims that the potion will be able to cure any aches and pains that you might have with a single drink. He also says that it is so potent that you will gain the bounce back in your step or feel the fire you lost in your loins once again. All he requires is a few special items that he's requested.

He is specifically looking for a jar of bat drippings, a box of assorted scales, a shaker full of monkey flakes, and some cat knuckles. Vague? How you get them is up to you. Time to get creative!

If you can acquire these the requested ingredients he'll happily gift you a copy of his reading material. And maybe a voucher for the potion once he's done brewing it.

» PALADINS (4pts)
Fountain of Blades
Reward: The Sword of Lasting Light.

The paladins are preparing for a new expedition. Gear up and travel to explore a newly discovered island to uncover a lost relic item. The item that the paladins are looking to uncover is the one and only Sword of Lasting Light, rumoured to be buried deep in the island’s core.

Upon arrival, travel down tunnels and moss-ridden caverns deep down into the island’s middle. Down below are several cenotes, which are natural pits or sinkholes resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater. There is something strange and alluring about this groundwater. These cenotes are filled with powerful youth-inducing water and little fish that nibble at your feet.

The pools of water have a way of luring people in and trapping them in old childhood memories (good or bad) that they will struggle to escape from. Anyone caught in the pools will be trapped inside these memories until they can find a way to escape them, such as someone pulling them from the memory themselves or gathering the strength of will to break free from the past.

Resist and escape the allure of pools of water, uncover the relic, and bring it back to Elah. Having the sword added to the Conservatory will grant Elah with longer-lasting lanterns, campfires, and candlelight. With the long winter solstice nights approaching soon, the light will be welcome.

Stress-Testing Substitute Dolls
Reward: 250 dubloons.

Help requested to test out two items meant to either take a few blows or completely distract any wildlife encountered during explorations and collect data to help improve their use. They are made compact for easy travel, but when thrown hitting the ground causes them to expand into a larger shape. The Substitute Doll can take a few hits before possible destruction so there is more time to get away, while the Poké Doll distracts, confuses, or sometimes soothes to give just enough time for someone to run.

I ask that any success or failure in use of either be reported back to me, Professor Turo. Hopefully with enough data I can improve upon their designs and create better versions to be of good use for those who wish not to fight wildlife in the areas they live in. Better that no harm come to either side.

Note: There is a chance they may not work if the encountered wildlife is angry enough that their complete focus is on you.

(Optional: Combine this quest with a bounty!)

Vexing Verse
Reward: Honed sword skills, the ability to load a canon and +1 to your Vicious Mockery.

With another wave of rifts opening all over the place comes another wave of recruits. And with the recent ghost ship attack, the paladins have decided to up their training protocols.

New and old recruits are encouraged to take part in various training modules to help sharpen their skills such as swordplay, loading and aiming canons, using magic in dangerous situations and taking adequate and precise notes. Veteran paladins are asked to teach the new recruits everything that they know about what it means to be a paladin.

One training seminar includes how to insult a corsair. Sometimes a good hardy insult is enough to break the spirit of a thieving corsair and avoid any unnecessary bloodshed. Try testing your best insults on one another to see who crumples under the pressure first.

» CORSAIRS (4pts)
Coins of the Crescent
Reward: Captain Randell Red-Lord's lost Gold Coins of Exceptional Healing.

The corsairs have caught wind of a new treasure for the taking. Travel to explore a newly discovered island where it is said that a dead captain’s lost Gold Coins of Exceptional Healing can be found. The coins may look like normal old currency but are actually lost artifacts that hold the power to cure curses.

The island itself is gray, eerie and trashed with several broken ships scattered across the shores. But it’s not the island that will prove difficult in this quest. Travelling closer to this island will seemingly haunt ships with strange wolf-like howls. The closer a ship sails to the island, the louder the howls get. Soon enough sailors might find that the howls drive people mad until they themselves start to howl and scream, almost like they have rabies or something worse. Those who cannot resist the howls will slowly turn rabid, even attacking fellow crewmates and friends with their teeth and nails.

If your ship can make it to the island intact with enough mind to treasure hunt and find these coins buried deep in the earth the howling curse will be completely lifted from all those effected by it.

Selling the coins to Nogard will grant casters on the island with faster-acting healing spells. If the coins are held in rotation on the island all healing items and medicine will be twice as effective. Useful, no?

Gallows Gambit
Reward: Your life!

Corsairs keep getting missives about being handcuffed and locked up in some rickety old gallows in the backstreets of Elah. No one is sure who is doing these backhanded arrests but many suspect a shady paladin who’s gone too arrest crazy.

If you find yourself locked up in the gallows do your best to escape before the guillotine blade falls or the noose tightens. This will be a great test for your skills in breaking out of bonds and cracking locks. Escape with your life!

While most corsairs would break themselves free and make for the docks alone it’s encouraged to help your fellow corsairs escape as well. If this corrupt paladin has been arresting people for no reason then there’s no reason to leave a man behind.

Battle of the Brewmasters
Reward: 250 dubloons. A hearty glass of pirate's grog anytime you want it!

The Naughty Gorgon tavern in Nogard is holding a Grog Brewing Competition. Whoever can create the next best pirate’s grog will have their beverage featured on the tavern’s menu for many years to come.

Use whatever ingredients you find fit, be it frog’s legs or sugar cane! So long as the grog gets people drunk as fast as possible the tavern doesn’t care how it might taste. But anything particularly tasty might have a hand up in the competition anyway! (Bonus props if your brew can also be used as lantern fuel.)

Alternatively, if you don’t find yourself a brewer the tavern is looking for brave corsairs to try the contestant’s various brews. Just make sure you have an iron-lined gut and a high tolerance for alcohol.

» BOUNTIES (6pts)
Hormone-Inducing Pollen Plants
Reward: 200 dubloons per plant killed.

A certain type of plant has somehow mutated and is trapping oblivious travellers in its vines. These medium-sized plants emit powerful hormones that attract creatures to wander in close. The pollen incites powerful sexual arousal in its prey in order to trap them. Once they are close enough the plants wrap their prey in powerful vines and consume them with a trap-like flower head and poisonous pistil.
