CAPTAIN'S LOG #19: MARCH 1, 2025


QUICK UPDATES

YO HO HO!! This month is going to be a bit different in how things are flowing, mostly due to all the arrests and abductions going on. We had quite a few people signed up and we look forward to seeing how it all unfolds in April 👀 But for those who aren't involved or may need something else to do, we have a few things on the MANTA Board that will certainly be worth your while!

Apps are also open so good luck to all!

We have updated the Calendar for important dates, but here is a quick heads up on what to expect this month:

The Manta Board has been posted with new and updated quests! Please look at the Special Quests because we have quite a few that we're starting up and we'll also be having another "mini event log" of sorts for one! More details further down.

AC RESULTS AND REMINDER

» We would like to remind players that if you are requesting to have a quest on the MANTA board to please write the quest in full with your AC submission, including rewards (if any). Going forward, we will be asking players to write their own submissions in order for it to be featured. If we have any questions or need changes, we will reach out.



NEXT APP CYCLE

Assuming that all new reserves apply and get in, our game will be squeaking near the cap again! Which means that public applications may or may not be open for the next application round in May.

So this is just another reminder of how our application rounds will continue to work:

5 or less (cap at 60): Public applications will be closed in May and will not reopen until July. Current players can still apply for additional characters.
At least 10 (cap at 55): Applications will be open in May but will be limited to player invites only. Direct mod invite requests will not be open.
At least 20 (cap at 45): Direct requests from mods will be open.


EXTRA NOTES

Here is a recap of a few things that occurred last month.

» Several of Sarht's golden keys were found by Shadow, Joshua, Emet-Selch, Kolnatha, Gale, Lyney, Cid, and Benedikta.
» Shadow and Kieran located a section of the temple that was split off from the main site with three indents in the stone fitting a cube... What could that mean? (Due to current happenings, the Temple Ruins Special Quest is paused and will return once things settle down!)
» After a lot of hard work gathering materials, Zelda's crew, Hand and Hearth, has finally received their ship! A ship with a striking white hull flying a blue and white standard can now be found docked at Eltrut.
» Sherlock and Lyney learned that the alchemist keeps track of the moon using a clockwork machine, and there was once something that the alchemist kept contained against its will with chains. Also, be warned: the curse can and has turned people into cats.
» Congratulations to Cid Telamon and Benedikta Harman on their marriage!

In terms of Special Quests on the MANTA Board, there are two new entries that involve treasure: one for the treasure map from the auction, and the other for Sarht's Treasure introduced in the Dragon's Gale event. These aren't high priority or anything and will carry over to next month and for however long they need for development. But if anyone wants to start gathering the pieces and work out a path for where these treasures might be, please do so! We are going to let players first try and come up with something neat for these, but if you need our hand or need more direction, feel free to ask questions and we can give a hand.

And if you remember back in December there was a group of eccentric pirates who wanted to put together an Escordvi Advent Calendar. It took them a while to put the calendars entries together but you can see the final results here. Feel free to have your characters comment on them.


ARRESTS/ABDUCTIONS

All right guys, as mentioned last month there will be a massive uptick of arrests and abductions occurring on both sides of the Armada. It also needs to be made clear it is not just PCs or even just riftfarers, it's everyone. PCs, NPCs, Paladins, Corsairs, riftfarers, locals, known criminals, upstanding citizens— A lot of people are getting blamed, framed, abducted, with only a handful being rightfully jailed. Although most are in relation to the crackdowns on the whale and crystal markets, the reasons will still vary wildly which makes it even more chaotic.

Needless to say, tensions will be very high this month and thus there will be a lot of suspicion and distrust between the Paladins and Corsairs. Members of the opposing Armada may find themselves barred from certain businesses, including those in Eltrut. For example, a Corsair owned shop may ban any Paladins from entering. It will also be more difficult for members of opposite Armadas to travel to the Leviathans. For example, any Corsair ship may be refused to dock at Elah, or a Paladin trying to enter Nogard may be immediately detained before released if proven "safe." Even then there will be a hostile atmosphere and eyes watching their every move.

Of course, while there are definitely bad actors involved, there are groups on both sides trying to fix things and make them right. These groups don't want the relationship between the two Armadas to deteriorate, so they will be working hard to release any who are unjustly detained or help investigate those who are kidnapped. Corsairs in particular will not shy away from taking down their own, though that also means the opposite is true: there are those who will gladly take the opportunity to cut down the more "just" to keep them off their trail. So for those who are working on the side of justice regardless of Armada, be careful.

Why are there more Paladins—

Given the variety and how most have their own plans, please make your own logs!

FOR THOSE WHO SIGNED UP AND WANTED TO BE INTEGRATED INTO THE FINALE LOG IN APRIL!!! Please comment HERE to confirm that your character will be part of it. ICly, this will likely mean that your character will not be arrested/abducted until closer to the end of March. And just to clarify, by "integrating" what we mean is we will try to include the characters in the log in prompts in some way, and we will work with players for whatever ideas they may have. Otherwise, these characters will be part of other victims who will also be in the finale log that will need rescuing (or will attempt their own jailbreak y'all do what you want lmfao).

Finally, we have an entry on the Special Quest section of the MANTA Board regarding these arrests and abductions, but it's mostly there to give a basic framework and give everyone a bonus for participating. So when you do your threads, be sure to mark them for the 12 points!

SPECIAL QUEST: KUDZU ISLAND

As mentioned earlier, there is a special quest listed on the MANTA Board…though there's not much there for the moment. Instead of one of our usual "events," because we have the arrests/abductions we're going to have more of a "mini event log" sort of thing and utilize the Special Quest structure for this.

While we won't give all the details here, this will be more of an exploration adventure type quest that will last for a majority of the month. This should hopefully allow those who are in the arrest/abduction group opportunity to participate if they wish. But even if not, not to worry! The location won't be going anywhere and will carry over next month on the MANTA Board. Despite what the quest description might imply, the prompts will be a lot simpler and the vibe in general will be more relaxed to help balance out the tension in the game. Expect dealing with plants…a lot of plants. And this will be the start of a chain of related quests that we hope will be fun!

We're kind of using this as a "test run" of sorts as we look into different ways to provide different content that's not always some big huge event. This is alongside the future Crew Quests mentioned below. So we'll see how this works and will appreciate any feedback later!


FUTURE CREW QUESTS

We mentioned this back in December that we are considering providing Crew Quests on the MANTA Board to help give folks things to work on alongside whatever players themselves come up with. We've been able to work out some ideas and how we want to do this, but we won't be able to implement them until April or May due to other things happening in-game at the moment. So we're going to take the opportunity to discuss it further as well as hopefully get feedback and suggestions from our crews on what they would like to see so we can start working on any particular content!

For a general idea of what to expect, we're thinking of utilizing Crew Quests as another means to help people get out and explore and find things, as well as more opportunities for players to help build the world. Some quests may have specific settings, but others may be more generic, allowing players to come up with whatever they think is neat. In terms of prompts, those could range to something serious or something more generic. From helping villages to finding certain resources to hunting treasure to eliminating monsters and more. And as said before, we welcome any and all suggestions!! These quests are meant to cater towards different groups, so the more direction we have that can help our crews, the better. Players can even write up quests for us to put on the MANTA Board if it will fit.

Another thing we hope to do with Crew Quests is give us yet another avenue to open up certain "plot settings" so that we can have multiple threads going and progress before focusing on one and then moving to another. We hope this will make things a bit more organic, especially as crews may actually influence certain outcomes and developments. It's going to be a bit experimental, so we'll see how it goes. But we do hope this will help provide more things for everyone to play with.

Last thing to note, is that at least for now we will include Crew Quests with the Special Quests. We don't foresee there being too many of them at once, but if over time it gets crowded we'll create a separate section. Regardless, these quests will be worth 12 points for crew members. For characters not in a crew, you can still participate by helping crews take on quests! However, non-crew members will only receive half the points, which would be 6 points. For those using the spreadsheet, you can either overwrite the QS value to 6, or just mark it as QB, whatever works for you.

As said before, this will be a little experimental, so we'll continue to work and tweak it with any feedback players have. But we're kind of excited about it so can't wait to get it going soon!

hey there mods! kinda belated but a few q's about the arrests.

The first and the simplest question: Will non-detained characters know where the arrested ones are being held? Can it be found out, if at all?

The second more convoluted one: If, hypothetically, a cast with a history of storming scary places to get back detained party members (Looking at you, FF7s) got wind of Red being arrested (guaranteed), found out where he was being kept (possible), and decided to Do Their Thing and try to get him back (Plausible. Depends on what the cast say) I imagine that a ruckus wouldn't be good for the event or where this is going to lead.

So! If, hypothetically, they did get wind of where the detainees are being kept and decided to rescue the sweetest, goodest boy in all the world (and cloud) could you suggest a way for either it to go bad OR the rescue attempt to be completely unviable?

Are there two separate jails for the two Armadas? Like, would a paladin be held somewhere different than a corsair? Or are they all just kind of tossed in the same place for the time being?

Reason: Well she. Drank a man like a juicebox to regenerate health. And also broke a LOT of animals loose. But mostly that first thing.
Injuries: Probably some burns and maaaaybe stab wounds/some bullets? She...doesn't go down easy so restraining her might hurt her.
Ideas/goals: Naeva is going to be remarkably chill once imprisoned and just going to try and eavesdrop/listen to the people who abducted her, trying to suss out who's funding them and particularly how they sealed her powers so she can break that.

She's perfectly willing to bide her time until she can get her strength back and then have all hell break loose, but if other prisoners are escaping, she's more than willing to help. She's very patient.
Other:I would be interested, particularly if the abductors are interested in uh...experimentation with someone of her particular constitution.
Questions: So if her powers are sealed, would this affect her general uh. Resilience to dying, since she is technically undead? she is not unkillable by any means, but since she's undead things like, um, exsanguination or poison don't affect her very strongly normally. If this is still true, she might prove useful to people doing experiments with the crystals still, which I am very interested in. If not, well, she can't really heal until she gets another juicebox. :D

Reason: He's been poking his nose in places that some people feel he doesn't belong - he doesn't agree - he also had a significant role of dismantling one auction rather thoroughly. They all got a good look at him and he kind of stands out.
Injuries: Considering he'll probably struggle for a bit, I'm willing to let him have some bruises, cuts, broken bones, that kind of thing - not his wing bones though.
Ideas/goals: Hawks will likely try and antagonize those holding him in the hope that they'll let something slip. Because his abilities will be sealed, he'll have to do his detective work the old fashioned way instead of sending feathers off conveniently. He's likely to use a break out as cover to gather more intel, and to rescue anyone around who needs it.
Other: Not specifically - but if you have a role that needs filling, don't hesitate to reach out to me, I'm pretty open with my availability and willingness for plans.

Reason: Same reason as last time. Involved in various crystal people investigations and even helping the Paladins retrieve some crystallized people, and the baddies don't like that. Also because he's a pretty, pathetic babygirl. /hj

Injuries: Feel free to rough him up, break a few bones, just nothing that'll be permanently maiming. Heck, they can put him to sleep, and without his sleep aids, he can get stuck in nightmares. Then the dream injuries can go as far as anything done in his canon.

Ideas/goals: Sherlock will try to break out by lock picking. He may not be able to get far before he's tossed back into confinement and more properly restrained. I like the idea of someone(s) coming for him. "Yes, we came for you; you're worth saving you, nerd" So he won't be able to fully free himself.

Other: Sure, why not? I still like the idea of someone trying to get into his head and glimpsing The Horrors(tm). If that also backfires and leads to the baddies to learn of his fear of water, welp. Good luck, Sherry.

Reason: I'm c/ping this lmfao: Cid may have flown a little too close to the sun when involving himself in trying to uncover those who were involved in the whale hunting ring. He made contact with a rich couple was doing business in perfumes and wines and serviced some special shipment coolers for them to establish a connection and an "inroad" to know more what they're doing and feed some intel, and then led them to their arrest at the auction house. He had kept it "clean" to keep them from being suspicious, but certain things will expose him and so it's an act of revenge :D
Injuries: Yes probably 👀 Of course he can take a good licking, but not too severe or we'll have a greater problem on our hands—
Ideas/goals: He would definitely try to help in organizing a breakout of some kind!
Other: IT WOULD BE NEAT if could be part of the log but I'll let my spot go to someone else (especially since I'm the one writing the log lmfao.)

Reason: Miriam has infiltrated the sellers' operations several times, freeing several infected and helping to develop a treatment for them to stop the spread of their crystal growths. She conveniently revealed herself during one of the raids on the auction houses where she also did significant damage (and stole a treasure map).

Miriam also has crystals growing on her, distinct but similar to the crystal statues, which might be of interest for someone to study.
Injuries: Multiple silver buckshot equivalent rounds and heavy tranquilizers from being captured by werewolf hunters (due to not seeking a cure for her lycanthropy fast enough), and probably liberal application of whatever ingredients native Escordvi werewolves are weakened by (legally distinct wolfsbane, being kept away from moonlight, etc) to keep her depowered or in a wolf form to keep her from having thumbs and being a nuisance.

While her crystals can't be surgically removed (thanks demonic energy rocks), someone could certainly still try chipping off a sample if they were cruel enough.
Ideas/goals: Atm I'm blanking on them; Miriam will likely need outside help to escape, but will be much more useful once she regains the use of her thumbs and powers.
Other: Sure! I'm fine with a briefer mention too, like guards hinting at Miriam's presence further into the prison. But she's also a captive audience for studying, so.

Reason: For interfering with various poaching activities over the past few months
Injuries: Nothing lethal or permanent disabilities, otherwise open to almost anything. Would just ask to discuss serious, debilitating injuries ahead of time though!

Ideas/goals: Emet-Selch will be relatively helpless insofar that his magic will be sealed. He can still scrap and fight though, and if he can get a sword then he can use it in lieu of magic. Pending whether his soulsight can still be used, he may or may not also be blindfolded (not even necessarily because his kidnappers know what he can do but because his gaze just FEELS piercing).

I think I'd probably have him roughed up quite a bit. He's likely to sass his captors heavily initially, which would lead to them punishing him to keep him quiet. No permanent disabilities or killing, as mentioned, but he can certainly come away with most anything else.

Given the conversation he had before with Enterprise, I wouldn't be surprised if Emet tries to go for mass killing of his captors after being freed of whatever is restricting his powers. After such harsh treatment, it would certainly warrant him transforming.

Other: Unless someone stops him, there's definitely going to be a trail of dead people from his escape.

Reason: Since he was one of the ones who spearheaded the release of most of the animals, and due to the fact he's been taking care of the injured beasts all February, he's something of a target these days. He'll likely officially be brought in as a "savage beast" for trying to defend the Conservatory and those working within, but he's definitely being framed.
Injuries: Nanaki could definitely be roughed up a little! Probably some mean-looking cuts and lashes, especially if he's being detained as a "savage beast". May or may not be muzzled
Ideas/goals: He'll attempt to help with any breakout attempts that occur, or even just being there to help others who were captured feel a bit of comfort during their stay

Reason: Attempting to rescue Axel, leading to a fistfight and getting locked up.
Injuries: Roxas can be roughed up a little. Nothing broken, but he also doesn't need to be treated well.
Ideas/goals: Axel will be taken for interrogation, and will attempt to swipe a key, which he will pass along to Roxas for attempted jailbreaks. In the event that powers come back, Roxas would naturally pull out his keyblade and start unlocking things for maximum chaos and Roxas and Axel attempting their escape during that. In the event that powers don't come back, Roxas could just acquire more regular keys from a guard and start spreading them out.

Character: Axel | Emberized
Reason: Armada disloyalty (only reporting half of what he learned about the House that Watches Nobles to Stormbringer and selling the Rumrunners next attack locations to Paladins instead), Armada prejudice/Mistaken identity (due to his rap sheet getting confused/combined with Reno, who Axel impersonated back in Jan), Assault of officers, resisting arrest, disturbance of the peace, property damage, surely some form of arson (framed or not) And. Just being Axel.
Injuries: Roxas and Axel are going to get in a weaponless brawl with the armada when they try to arrest them on Nogard, so fairly bruised and battered but nothing major. Probably one sizeable head injury from the final blow that takes him down and I have no qualms against any further roughing up while incarcerated.
Ideas/goals: I think Axel would goad the guards into interrogating him and attempt to swipe a key in the process. Instead of keeping it however, he would try to pass it on to Roxas (or anyone who will free others and Roxas) and trust for his buddy to come free him after.

The plan would be like: Catching on that there is some confusion on how to charge him (due to his crimes getting lumped together with Reno, who he impersonated in January) Axel will try to goad the guards into taking him somewhere to interrogate. If being his charming (annoying) self doesn't get a guard's attention, perhaps the promise of making paperwork simpler by answering some questions (and filibustering like crazy while he explains in the most roundabout confusing way possible to stall for time) will.

While out, Axel would attempt to swipe a key. I have established he carries his pickers pocket under his glove for extra secrecy, (it's possible they might have missed it with the high volume of arrests, if he needs an extra edge?) Regardless, if he manages to get a key, he will attempt to pass it on to Roxas/ anyone who can start freeing others to kickstart their own little breakouts while he gets detained elsewhere.

From there all he has to do is continue to be distracting and trust Roxas will bust him out when everyone else breaks free

Other: Nah twist any of this around however you like, if you want to use it! Prompt-wise I would just do a general banter thread before interrogation and one after passing along the key and the actual full scale breakout.

Reason: Copying from last month this is an Abduction, likely from whoever was involved with the poaching/auctioneers. Was potentially recognized from the auction house where he and Leona kind of sort of took some sus magic books for themselves perhaps?? Azul especially had gone "undercover" of sorts pretending to be an auctioneer participant himself so they might be a little peeved to say the least if and when they recognize him. (And then realizing later they might have struck gold actually when his human form starts wearing off and he's a subject worth studying/trying to sell...)
Injuries: Feel free to rough him up (cuts, bruises, attempts at broken bones, black eyes or potentially being gagged from talking too much or even from trying to spit ink at someone's face at one point... once he ends up in merform, his tentacles could be lashed or banged up too from attempting to break out or from attempting to attack his kidnappers, or his tentacles being tied up with rope or something when he started trying to break the tank he's probably been stuck in.)
Ideas/goals: Azul will initially try to chat up the kidnappers and try to smooth talk his way into finding out anything they might let slip or if they are susceptible/gullible enough to give him access to his magic to let him cut deals with them. However, this attempt at playing nice will dry up quickly as I think it could make for potentially interesting consequences if this plot involves being held in captivity long enough that Azul's human form starts to wear off since he's being cut off from his magic/his potions that he would normally make to look as human as possible in game. If he ends up in full octomerform by the time that he's being rescued, perhaps he has to be rescued from a tank that they shoved him into after he stopped being human?
Other: I have some thoughts regarding his rescue since he's been trying to hide his merform up until now (and was considering/plotting with Leona's player specifically being a rescuer if that's doable??) but I can see how things go once the log goes up and if you guys have different ideas for how you might want Azul incorporated into the log, we can perhaps have it be a team effort to help get Azul who is stuck in merform the hell outta there. Or, if you only want Azul just having a minor shoutout, thats fine too! I'm cool with giving up my spot for special involvement in the main log if someone else wants it more. Regardless of how things shake out, this whole ordeal is probably going to speed up Azul's plans to try risky magic in Escordvi in order to try to get home...

Reason: Garrus has a bad habit of sticking his spiky nose where it doesn't belong and making crime-leaning sentient beings really mad at him. He hasn't done anything BIG like that, here, but he's definitely been participating in a bounty here or there that would make a couple unsavory types mad. Somebody god mad ENOUGH to pull a couple strings and arrest the big metallic-looking alien with the really big gun.

Injuries: make him suffer He will not go quietly. As a result, he'll be pretty banged up. Bruised, some blood, maybe a sprain or two. He's got these big ol' spurs on his knees that are probably wrench-able.

Ideas/goals: I am pretty open to anything here. He has confidence his big scary commander GF will not let this rest, so he'd be more invested in helping other people get out, if need be. If an opportunity to escape presents itself, he'd be more likely to help someone else before himself. He's also going to be in rough shape, so naturally, helping out others is a better idea. it's a turian thing

Character: Cloud | makoglow

Reason:
Mostly because Cloud has been a pain in the ass for the entirety of the whale investigations. He appeared at the auction and swiped information. Freed some critters. Isn't backing down.

Injuries:
Nothing serious. Bruises and cuts, mostly. The most is maybe a broken bone ( my thought is collarbone ). My thought is that the only way that they could take Cloud down is because they drugged him or something. They'll need to do something to keep him down, so cuffed up or tied up.

Ideas/goals:
Of course he's going to try to break free at least once. Maybe he succeeds and that's how he ends up with that broken bone and tied down. Otherwise he'll be trying to pay attention to what's going on around him. Making notes for later. I have some people lined up to save him so of course he's not going to be able to go anywhere until freed.

Other:
I had a thought of Fenris ( his 3 headed doggo ) going nuts and participating in trying to find Cloud.
