Hello hello! I'm Joy or Joys, I'm here with Sister Lashan from the Heralds of Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey, though Lashan is from thousands of years before either Valdemar or its Heralds are a thing. She's a former mercenary turned mage-blacksmith and lay Sister for an odd little religious enclave. It's not hard to tell that she's a bruised idealist who still cares pretty easily. Will she quasi-adopt someone here? Maybe.

She can be a fantastic fighter but only for quite short periods of time or she pays hard. She can also play with lightning a bit but again that can be problems. Tough to do certain things when you're seventy! And she doesn't understand the body well enough to be a good Healer. What Lashan can do is see magic and often dismantle others' spells if she can study them a while, ward against and harm ghosts and demons, some psychic stuff (I'm not gonna have her read minds without discussing it first, but she's got Empathy going and will know how people around her feel unless they're obfuscated in that area), animals to a degree, and crafty stuff.

Lashan's best skill is making magic swords but she's disinclined to do that much here even if given the opportunity just because they're a lot of work. Work that she likes, but she's not supporting her community with sale/gifts of them! She's more likely to make charms that have magic effects. Unlike the reward charms most of them will break after some uses, and her luck charms are of the "I stepped to the side just in time to be missed by the falling spar" type. But she can sell or give you something that will waterproof your clothes and gear! (Your hair can still get soaked.)

She is also afraid of the ocean (and also just the kind of stubborn old coot to set her teeth and glare about it) and has never learned to swim lol. My first goal is to get her to unbend enough to ask someone to teach her.

aaaaah it's a work night and I am on rotation gotta split. I will get to things as I can. I'm on the disco, and you can find me at [plurk.com profile] joysweeper

We've already said hi and stuff on Plurk, but welcome to the game officially!

Sherlock can't help Lashan with the swimming, but he is willing to purchase a permanent bubble charm for her for emergencies if she wants because hell's bells is it rough here. Don't want charity? Fine, they can trade for a thing that'll keep his casebook dry/waterproof or something

thank you!

aww that's sweet of him. If he says "hell's bells" that will give her pause lol. Lashan's willing to take charity, drowning is a nightmare idea, but she will then ask if there's something she can do for him and waterproofing his casebook would be good! She might be able to etch on the cover or create a charm bookmark. ...Paper will also give her pause, and really fluid literacy. Good reading skills are pretty specialized and unusual in her time (she can read but it's some effort).

Sherlock is allowed to curse after the things he's been through. Drowning is horrible, and he does not recommend it.

Lashan will have to get used to reading more and more. It's wildly used in this world.

Of course, of course. She's just not certain about the bells part.

alas. Tbh she's lucky she's as good as it as she is! Medievals and all.

Hi Joys, welcome to the game!!!

We welcome cool old magical ladies in this game, and this whippersnapper's definitely dealt with one back home. He's probably going to ask if she can waterproof people cause uh, he'd really like that lmao. In exchange, he can teach her how to swim! (and make that like three people he's promised to help swim.)

[personal profile] hasapoint 2024-09-06 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!!!

hee. She could make a charm that waterproofs a person but I think the efficacy would quickly wear off (wash off?) and be partial. She would at least be up front about that.

If she knew, Lashan would be fascinated by Ranma's curse! In a few thousand years when she's something else, she transitions someone overnight to cure her dysphoria and would probably have ideas, right now she's too regular lol.

He'd be a little disappointed it's not a permanent solution, but eh, not that much. He's had this curse long enough to where while he hasn't accepted it and still wants it gone (which he'll probably ask if she could remove it), he's come to tolerate it to where changing isn't a big deal anymore.

I love that for her omg <3. I need to throw this anklebiter at Lashan at some point. I wanted to during the TDM, but RL clotheslined me oof.

nods! Lashan can usually take apart other peoples' spells but this is something else, not applied by a conscious being etc.

yeah, it's pretty cool of her! I have Lashan be transfemme herself partly because of that.

At some point when Ranma's being particularly /gestures she'll probably be like gods was I like him at that age? (she was worse) Regardless, it's not too late if you liked any of the prompts!

LMAO. He's just standing there all pouty like 'Whaddaya mean by that??' (omg lmao). Awesome, I'll definitely take a look at your TL and see if there's any I can throw him at.

Hiya, Joy! I'm Laena and I have Cid from Final Fantasy XVI and Eustace from Granblue Fantasy. Welcome to the game and thanks for joining!!

Both of mine are lightning users and either could get along with Lashan so I will be sure to try and get a thread with her cos she seems so cool.

[personal profile] hasapoint 2024-09-06 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you Laena!

I'm looking forwards to it! Actually casting lightning from her hands scorches her and is rough but Lashan can call lightning from dark clouds with less of a problem, and she'd be interested to see how either or both of yours do it.

Hi Joy! I'm Caprica, and I have this here tiny nerd, Hiro Hamada from Disney's Big Hero 6 and Sorey from Tales of Zestiria. I've read some of the Valdemar books, but it's been years, and I only read iirc the Arrows trilogy, Brightly Burning, and the ones with Vanyel. So I'm trying to remember if Lashan was in those, and I've forgotten because it has been so long, or if she might be from some that I didn't read. Either way, she sounds great! I'm keen to see her and what she gets up to here!

[personal profile] hasapoint 2024-09-08 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi Caprica! Nice to meet you! I saw Big Hero 6 back when it was in theaters.

Heh, it's cool, I reread those just a couple years ago! Lashan, and the haunted sword that she becomes, isn't in those books, though (as "Need") she's in the sword-and-sorcery stories the author wrote before the Arrows books and the one set right after them. Returning to these books has been a mixed bag but there have still been parts where it's like, yeah I see why I loved this as a kid.

My old lady will mostly take it cautious at first, I think. I'm still feeling her out!
baymaxing: (I've got the scars from tomorrow)

[personal profile] baymaxing 2024-09-09 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm still like, 'Wait, it didn't come out that long ago??? Except. Yeah. It's been a while, haha. I have the art book and have seen the series, too. Which follows after the events of the film.

Oh yeah, for sure. Some things do hold up when you revisit when you're older. Others maybe not as much. But at the least, you could find some things you still loved/enjoyed about the books. It's been a while since I reread them myself, and I don't have all the books, just those I mentioned.

But hey. If she ever needs, there is Baymax to help with health issues or the like?
