Its been a few years since Tali was young and significantly less worldly. On her pilgrimage, determined to make her people proud by bringing back something that would truly impress her fleet. Ships are everything to Quarians, and have been since they were forced from their homeworld and onto the Migrant Fleet, a flotilla that contained the remnants of her people. Even after centuries they're maladapted physically, wearing special suits to safely navigate the world and carefully monitoring for infections at all times.
Despite this, she'd been a part of Shepards crew when the Reapers had been discovered. She'd fought alongside her to ultimately take down Cerberus and force the world to unite against their seemingly inevitable destruction. They'd made it in no small part due to her engineering prowess and skill with a pistol.
She loves tech, she loves ships, and she's pretty good at making friends. I'd be taking her from the end of ME3, right before Shepard goes off to make A Major Choice. She's learned life is short and to treasure what you have while fighting to keep every scrap of it you earn.
Also you should get her drunk, she's a really fun drunk.
