1. It's only for food, unfortunately! If anything else is stored in there it will projectile spit it out!
2. The trees are simply gourd trees. There's nothing magical or special about them. But, the gourds they grow are very tough. So tough that you could probably widdle one down into a decent shiv...
In this section of the island, there are only spectrals patrolling the halls. Other parts of the prison do have living breathing people but for the sake of this quest at this time we're only focusing on the spectral paladins. You might see other parts of the prison at a later time!
Edit: Sorry, I realize I didn't address the keys part! There should be strange ghostly shaped keys on the spectral paladins. Which might prove to be a challenge to use if you manage to steal one or two. The keys can be held and will last for about 20 minutes before they fade into air. But a gourd "shiv" might do the trick as a lockpick too.
